The Mosque (“tuyrma”- jail)

It is one of the architectural sightseeing in the city. The mosque is built on the right shore of Bistritsa river and it is located in the city center. There is not an exact year of its building, but researchers date it to be at the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century. The foundations have built-in slabs, which are assuming the existence of a Christian temple in this place before the Ottoman invasion. Legends say that this place was the “St. Georgi” monastery. Almost from the Renaissance until the end of 1922 the Mosque is taking the role of a district prison (“tuyrma”) from where it comes the more famous name of the antiquity- Tuyrmeto. After that, until 1936 it is used as an archeological museum and afterward as a sports hall. It was announced as a cultural monument and a cultural monument in an ensemble of local significance together with the  District house in the state newspaper №77/1968.
